Last week, President Obama unveiled the Chapter 33 post-9/11 GI Bill. The bill pays for a qualifying veteran’s tuition and fees up to the amount of the most expensive public undergraduate institution in the state in which that university is located, in addition to a generous stipend for costs of living and supplies. While the new bill has received ample publicity and enjoyed the eager anticipation of millions of veterans, a second benefit, the Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP), remains obscured and misunderstood. Education Secretary Arne Duncan Visits Bay Area To Discuss Stimulus FundsSomething that kind of went under the media’s radar last week was Arne Duncan’s July 2nd speech before the National Education Association convention. The annual gathering of the nation’s largest union was held from July 1-6 in San Diego, California. The Secretary’s address received some coverage from wire news services and California newspapers, but for what Mr. Duncan was saying, major newspaper coverage (i.e. NYT and WashPo) was noticeably absent.
