A somewhat slanted recap of highlights from President Barack Obama’s week:

Black on White Crime Continues to Go Unreported

By JFK, July 9, 2009 under Culture, News | No Comments

Leave it to Drudge to dig up the stories that the mainstream media won’t cover.

An Akron Ohio man was brutally attacked by dozens of young black men after a fireworks display on July 4th.

Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ”This is our world” and ”This is a black world” as they confronted Marshall and his family.

In front of his family, the man received a severe beating Continue Reading »

(Somewhat) In memoriam: the King of Pop, the prince of Late Night, America’s sex symbol, and oh yeah, 156 Chinese protesters

Michael Jackson wax unveiled at Madame Tussauds in London

Over the past week, death seemingly wormed its way into every major headline. First it was Ed McMahon, legendary side-kick to the more legendary Johnny Carson. Sexy pin-up Farrah Fawcett followed suit with MJ moonwalking to his grave just hours later. The Grim Reaper then added Billy “Who?” Mays, Steve McNair, and Robert McNamara to his already sizable collection.

In fact, major news networks struggled to keep up with the slew of celebrity deaths as various planned tribute broadcasts switched from McMahon to Fawcett to the grandiose spectacle that was the Michael Jackson memorial.

Obama’s pre-Vatican overtures are a smokescreen

By KC Luciano, July 8, 2009 under News | 3 Comments

Descending in Italy today for the July 8-10 G8 Summit, President Barack Obama will move onto the Vatican for his first audience with the Pope on Friday. In advance of that meeting, Obama hosted a roundtable meeting with Catholic G8 Summit in LAquilareporters and The Washington Post on July 2nd.

In that conversation, Obama asserted that he supported a “robust” conscience clause for hospitals and health care providers. The conscience clause would afford doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals protection against forced participation in abortion procedures or the subscription of abortifacient drugs.

Who is NY’s new Lt. Governor Richard Ravitch?

By Joe L-E, July 8, 2009 under News | 2 Comments

Kirsten E. Gillibrand Meets with Clinton, Patterson and Schumer - New York

Believe it or not, New York Governor David Patterson appears to have selected someone for appointment not because of their race, religion, or how many votes they will help them garner in the next election.

Richard Ravitch appears to be the pick for lieutenant governor. Ravitch has thrice been in charge of New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and has been credited with saving the organization all three times. Just this past spring he helped avert a major crisis–and basically just turned it into a little one–which is nonetheless commendable.

But of course, no move in politics is ever so innocent: Continue Reading »

Social Security not so secure: Who’s going to get fired for this one? No one.

By Tim Ryder, July 8, 2009 under News | 2 Comments

If you’re like me, you sit at work thinking to yourself, “Hey, even though today was boring, I can retire in 43.5 years and collect monthly checks on taxpayer dollar! This is great! Social Security 4ever! Yeah!!”

Wait, wait…What’s that you say? Continue Reading »

On the Lighter Side of Things…Putin Whoops Obama’s Ass

By JFK, July 7, 2009 under News | No Comments

Obammy recently visited Russia to hammer out his so-called “reset” agenda.  Foreign policy aside, I couldn’t help but notice the oozing euphemism from the New York Times regarding Obama’s dismissive gestures toward the Russians.

“The decision to brush off the Russians on one of his two nights here miffed some in the Moscow government who did not understand why he would not devote the scarce time to his hosts. Mr. Obama had dinner with President Dmitri A. Medvedev on Monday and lunch with him on Tuesday. But with the second dinner slot unavailable, he ended up having breakfast Tuesday with Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin, a known night owl Continue Reading »

Obama education secretary: unions should reconsider tenure, incorporate student acheivement in teacher evaluations and pay

By KC Luciano, July 7, 2009 under News | 4 Comments

Education Secretary Arne Duncan Visits Bay Area To Discuss Stimulus FundsSomething that kind of went under the media’s radar last week was Arne Duncan’s July 2nd speech before the National Education Association convention. The annual gathering of the nation’s largest union was held from July 1-6 in San Diego, California. The Secretary’s address received some coverage from wire news services and California newspapers, but for what Mr. Duncan was saying, major newspaper coverage (i.e. NYT and WashPo) was noticeably absent. Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair killed in Nashville

It wouldn’t be a shooting without someone in the media blaming guns. Can’t let an opportunity go to waste! Here’s this week’s exploiter, Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News, writing about Steve McNair’s murder:

The gun was found next to the woman, Sahel Kazemi. Where did the gun come from? Where it always comes from: Somewhere. … He is the 36th homicide victim in Nashville this year. That is down from 41 at the same time last year. Only in a country of gun lovers is that considered progress.

And just who would argue that less murders isn’t progress? Continue Reading »

Oldies but goodies

This is really just some housecleaning on my part, because I’ve been meaning to post these links for some time.  (Back before I realized blogging alone was a terrible idea). I’m transferring links from my old blogs to have some more material for people to review if they choose– and to still use this thing for a little bit of personal promotion.  (So if someone wants to hire me as a columnist, consider these my official writing samples!)  Feel free to comment, despite the fact that some of this stuff is ancient.
