(Somewhat) In memoriam: the King of Pop, the prince of Late Night, America’s sex symbol, and oh yeah, 156 Chinese protesters
Over the past week, death seemingly wormed its way into every major headline. First it was Ed McMahon, legendary side-kick to the more legendary Johnny Carson. Sexy pin-up Farrah Fawcett followed suit with MJ moonwalking to his grave just hours later. The Grim Reaper then added Billy “Who?” Mays, Steve McNair, and Robert McNamara to his already sizable collection.
In fact, major news networks struggled to keep up with the slew of celebrity deaths as various planned tribute broadcasts switched from McMahon to Fawcett to the grandiose spectacle that was the Michael Jackson memorial.
Sports writers off the mark
It wouldn’t be a shooting without someone in the media blaming guns. Can’t let an opportunity go to waste! Here’s this week’s exploiter, Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News, writing about Steve McNair’s murder:
The gun was found next to the woman, Sahel Kazemi. Where did the gun come from? Where it always comes from: Somewhere. … He is the 36th homicide victim in Nashville this year. That is down from 41 at the same time last year. Only in a country of gun lovers is that considered progress.
And just who would argue that less murders isn’t progress? Continue Reading »
An attempt at a non-cliched Independence Day comment
Every July 4, people from both sides of the aisle made some outrageous, ginormous statements regarding Independence Day and what it means to them, their families, America, etc. Those on the Left use it to say it is a day to promote the great freedoms we have today, and then devolves into a discussion on their “civil right” du jour or a rant about how the Declaration wasn’t so hot after all. Conservatives use it to chide America for going too far away from what the founders intended or reminding us of their sacrifice.
Obviously, today is a big deal. But ultimately, it’s a big birthday party, and you know how those can wind up. It all depends on how old you are to determine what the appropriate celebration should be. Continue Reading »
“Because hunny, you can always win by just calling your opponent’s argument an attack!”
The extent to which the left holds itself up as the model of intellectualism is never ceasing source of amusement. Aside from the fact that good scholarship should be able to stand on its own and survive scrutiny, this self-regard often results in the acceptance of poor logic, and outright falsehoods, in favor of ideological adherence and group think. Possibly the stupidest bumper sticker that I’ve ever seen
Driving home from the gym today, I was behind a car that had a bumper sticker that read “No More World Drama, Vote Obama”.
I know it’s meant to be hyperbole and I understand that Obama has higher approval ratings in foreign countries than George W. Bush did or John McCain probably would have had, but has Obama saved us from world drama? I don’t think folks in Iran, North Korea, Iraq or Honduras would agree (and that’s just in the past month).
Until Obama finds a way to bring democracy to Iran (and dismantling their nuclear weapons program), stop North Korea from developing nuclear arms, quell violence in Iraq and allow Honduras to have a government that is not authoritarian, then I’ll believe that Obama can actually stop world drama.
In (partial) defense of Sanford
It didn’t take long for someone to call South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) a hypocrite, and it’s no surprise that someone at DailyKos is leading the charge.
I remember reading an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal’s opinion page a couple years back when David Vitter (R-LA) was caught on the phone list of the infamous DC Madam. Vitter, naturally, was skewered in the media and called a hypocrite. The same is now happening to Sanford, but only one is rightly deserved. Continue Reading »
Star Ledger: In defense of the ‘Housewives’
My article: In defense of the ‘Housewives’ is featured on The Star Ledger’s online site NJVoices this afternoon. I take on the critics for what they said about the stereotypes of my home state on the Bravo show “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”
For those of you coming over from NJ.com… WELCOME! This site is just starting to get underway, so I encourage you to bookmark this now (crtl + d) and keep coming back for more news on current events (NJ and national), politics, finance, and culture from regular, young people who know how to appeal to everyone using new media… and happen to be right a lot of the time. (See Bando Bucks’ first two columns here and here).
Taking back our institutions
Apparently the Roman Catholic Church in Spain takes abortion a little more seriously than its American counterpart. “Bishop Juan Antonio Martínez Camino said: ‘Strict church doctrine says no true Catholic believer can agree with or support this move [to liberalize Spain’s abortion laws].’
Bishop Camino said those who participated in abortion would be immediately excommunicated.”
?!
In America, we have American priests actively campaigning for abortionists. Continue Reading »
Pathetically progressive
My alma mater, the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, VA, has been going through an identity crisis over the last few years. Rather than actually spending time and money on developing the athletics program in order to bring in some revenue, the College has had to focus on a mascot issue. Evidently, the answer comes in the form of a vegetable. Continue Reading »
The Educated Pour
Take a look at the creative efforts from a good friend of mine, Tim Hillmann. I don’t think anyone reading this necessarily needs the help in learning about booze, but a little bit of revisionist history on beer is always funny.
